Australian Labradoodle Breeders Serving Nashville, TN

Australian Labradoodles in Nashville, TN

A Labradoodle… a Labrador crossed with a Poodle, right? Well – no actually, it’s not quite that simple! There are several types of Labradoodle, and they are all quite different, so it is important to understand the differences between them.

Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles are both popular hybrid breeds that result from crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. While they share similarities, there are distinct differences between the Labradoodle and the Australian Labradoodle.

The Labradoodle, initially bred in the 1980s, was primarily aimed at creating a hypoallergenic guide dog with the intelligence and friendly demeanor of a Labrador Retriever and the non-shedding coat of a Poodle. However, Labradoodles can vary widely in size, coat type, and temperament, as the breed still needs to be standardized. The coat may be curly, wavy, or straight, and it may or may not be hypoallergenic.

On the other hand, the Australian Labradoodle is a more refined and standardized breed. Originating in Australia in the 1990s, the Australian Labradoodle was developed by crossing Labradoodles with other breeds like the Irish Water Spaniel and the Curly Coated Retriever, among others. The goal was to enhance specific traits like coat consistency, temperament, and allergy-friendliness. Australian Labradoodles are known for their allergy-friendly, non-shedding coats and come in miniature, medium, and standard sizes.

Another key difference lies in their temperament. While both breeds are generally friendly and sociable, the Australian Labradoodle is often bred with a focus on temperament and trainability, making them excellent family pets and therapy dogs. Their breeding history contributes to a more predictable and desirable temperament than the Labradoodle.

In short, while Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles stem from the same basic crossbreeding concept, the Australian Labradoodle has undergone further refinement to create a more standardized breed with predictable traits, including coat type, size, and temperament.
